Jana Richardsabout this book: Home Fires is set just after the end of World War Two, and gave me the opportunity to research stories about Canadian War Brides. Since Canadian soldiers were in England from the start of the war in 1939, until the war ended in 1945, they had plenty of opportunity to meet young women in the UK. Some forty thousand war brides along with about twenty thousand of their children arrived in Canada between 1942 and 1947. The majority of these women had successful marriages and good lives in Canada. But for some, the dream of a wonderful new life didn't pan out. A friend of mine in her eighties told me about a war bride she knew who was rejected by her Canadian husband when she arrived. But her story turned out well; she met and married another soldier in Canada and they had a long and happy marriage. This war bride was the inspiration for my character Anne. Like the real war bride, Anne's fiancé decides he doesn't want her, and though she doesn't believe it at the time, his rejection turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to her.
