Sandra Luckabout this book: When I lived it St. Augustine I enjoyed walking my dogs through the old town. As they sniffed and marked their territory I would think about all the history that they were reading. How many dogs over the years had visited that same stone wall? What stories they could tell. That was the inspiration for The Dogs of St Augustine. Who better to eavesdrop on private conversations than the innocent dog or cat who just happened to be in the room with you.
This story for young readers brings to life one of my favorite local historical tales. Set in 1702 in Spanish Florida, the nearly two month long siege of St. Augustine is told through the eyes Alba, a young Spitz pup left behind when his ship sails off without him.
He is befriended by the local dog pack, a hearty family of Catahoula Leopard Hounds. Alba is smitten by Dice, the tough young huntress of the pack.
He meets many of the local men of the town, from the scouts to men of the garrison of the Castillo de San Marco. These latter men are real, they lived and some of them died back during that tumultuous time.
I enjoyed researching through the archives of the St. Augustine Historical Society, but more so what breeds of dogs were around in America at that time.
