Douglas P. Cornelius

Author Douglas P. Corneliusabout this book: In The Baker's Daughter, my goal is to reveal to the YA reader (and above) the true depths of God's unconditional love, as demonstrated through the growth of two strong characters: the protagonist, Liddy, and the antagonist, Nazi officer Keppler.

I show how a teenage daughter can rebound from one of the worst mistakes a person can imagine, to eventually go toe-to-toe with Keppler, who has his own issues with understanding God's love. I believe if a person truly grasps the extent of that love, he or she can step out in courage.

To re-inforce this idea, I had to do research into important Christians such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Maximillian Kolbe, who become models in their cameo roles of how to use their own God-given talents to make important contributions to the Resistance. Eric Metaxas' book, Bonhoeffer--Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, Roger Moorhouse's Berlin at War, and Frossard and Fontan's Forget Not Love: The Passion of Maximilian Kolbe were valuable resources.

In all, I believe The Baker's Daughter demonstrates the importance and promise of faith in the midst of the evils and challenges of life in WW II Berlin. The prospect of the redemption of Nazi officer Keppler helps drive the story forward as he strategically resists the typical apologetic arguments. An unexpected ending surprises some, but is totally consistent with the story, the times, and the legacy of the Christian martyrs.
