Author Lynette Reesabout this book: Red Poppies, is a story that takes place in the middle of the Great War of 1914-1918. I got the idea for this plot after reading about various nurses and female doctors who had behaved heroically during that particular time.

The story begins in 1916 when Adele Owen is standing at the grave of a family member, whilst another member of the family has recently been killed on the first day of The Battle of the Somme, on July 1st of that particular year.

Adele has a dilemma, she's been working as a nurse at a local hospital, just as her mother did before her, but she yearns to become a doctor, this is during a time when female doctors were few and far between.

It's a man's world and a time of campaigning for the Suffragettes who want to see 'Votes for Women'. Change is afoot, but will Adele become a part of it?

After breaking the news to her parents, Adele goes to London to train, but is met by opposition by the male trainee doctors at the hospital, who make life difficult for her, often putting her down in public and trying to humiliate her. But unknown to them, Adele has already caught the eye of an eminent surgeon, James Bellingham, who sees something stoic and worthwhile in her. So much so, he offers to mentor her and plans to take her to the Front with him to work at a casualty clearing station in Ypres, Belgium.

Once there, she is thrown in the deep end, amongst the explosions and horrors of war, not to mention her involvement with shell-shocked soldiers, some of whom, signed up underage to take the King's shilling, often because of pressure from 'The White Feather Movement' or society itself.

Adele draws close to James whilst overseas, but she also has someone at home who wants to spend his life with her when she returns. Which one should she choose?

Meanwhile, as she struggles to help the wounded, will she survive the Battle of Passchendaele herself?
