Author Nathan D. Makiabout this book: A War Within: The Healer is the story of a young man's quest to find his mother and free her from slavery against all odds. Theudas ben Ya'ir is a Praetorian tribune, bodyguard to Emperor Septimius Severus of Rome. As the Roman legions pillage and burn their way through the Parthian Empire, Theudas learns that his mother Suzanna is a slave in the Parthian fortress city of Hatra. Now Theudas and his friends must thwart the might of Rome, raise the siege of Hatra, infiltrate the city, and escape with his mother. Through it all, Theudas struggles to maintain his faith in Christ amidst the fires of war.

Writing historical fiction is a unique challenge. I put a tremendous amount of research into my books in order to accurately portray the events, places, and characters. I want readers to not only enjoy a gripping read, but also to come away from my books with a greater knowledge and understanding of the Ancient World. I love bringing history to life through the eyes of fictional characters while staying true to actual events. This imposes a certain amount of structure on the novel, but can also lead to uncovering wonderful details or suggesting plot twists that I would never have dreamed up otherwise. Truth is stranger than fiction after all.

The Healer is the final installment of the War Within series of novels. While it can stand alone, readers may wish to read The Gladiator, The Legionnaire, and The Praetorian. The series starts with tragedy and a loss of faith in The Gladiator, propels Theudas and his friend Antonius into an Empire-wide civil war in The Legionnaire, and finds them battling back against persecution in The Praetorian. The Healer draws the series to a close showing that through it all God is faithful and He is The Healer after all they have been through.

I hope you'll read and enjoy The Healer. You, the reader, are the reason I write.
