Author Bree Housleyabout this book: What is a best friend? Duh, right? Well, in the unfortunate case that you weren't blessed with one, she's the five lumps of sugar in your coffee; she's the Dr. Scholl's shoe insert for your foot-mangling heels; she's the zit cream for your day's little blemishes. In short, life just isn't as good without her.

My bond with Shelly began in fourth grade with a poorly improvised song about the drinking fountain. Our friendship flourished through the awkward years of high school, the "exploratory" semesters of college, and then matured beautifully into young adulthood. I stood next to her on her wedding day in 2004 and then again by her hospital bed as she died from Preeclampsia complications in 2005 after giving birth to a baby girl. Just as instantly as we were brought together, we were tragically torn apart.

I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt and wanted to thank Shelly for all those years of love and support she offered. Shelly was fearless, friendly and sometimes, batshit crazy. So in effort to honor her, I, too would break out of my shell and be all those things — but only for a year. My sister, Courtnee, graciously volunteered to stumble along with me down this unpaved road.

Each week, we came up with a "resolution" and completed it in seven days. Whether we escaped our narrow comfort zones, accomplished daring feats, or just lived life a little differently than usual, we celebrated the spirit of that popular blond we missed so much.

WE HOPE YOU LIKE THIS SONG: An Overly Honest Story about Friendship, Death, and Mix Tapes is an unapologetically raw memoir, equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, about the about the profound affect women have on one another. Through this unassuming adventure, sisters got closer, friendships got stronger, and closure became a reality.
