Tammy Rugglesabout this book: In April of 2013, I reached a decision to stop doing art. This is because I have a blinding disease called RP, and over the years, have continued to lose sight little by little. I was a sketcher, not a painter, and it was impossible to see people well enough to draw them. So I decided to accept it and move on. I've had to make adjustments like this all along the way, so I'm accustomed to it.
But when a Facebook Friend named Sonja read my remark online about giving art up, she suggested I try finger painting, because it was something I could do intuitively. I certainly understood what she meant, because I use intuition all the time to do things. But I wasn't a painter of any sort, let along a finger painter.
But I loved art too much to let it go. With mixed feelings, I bought some bottles of acrylic paint and a package of printing paper, and these 492 finger paintings came out.
I could barely see the paper, and which color I was using, or how my pictures were coming along, so I really did have to rely on my intuition, memory, and imagination to paint the images in my mind's eye--rural scenery from my childhood in Kentucky. Fields, trees, creeks, barns, shacks, flowers, skies.
I want to show the world that the blind and visually impaired can create art, just in a different way; and that if we push ourselves a little, good things can happen. Some of my paintings have been in art shows, and others have been published in literary journals and art magazines.
I always knew I was a good sketch artist, but I never knew I was a painter. I invite you to have a look at mine, and tell me what you see.
