Alan James Garnerabout this book: What fantasy author doesn't wish to delve into the realms of Elves, Dwarfs or Goblins?
WIZARDS' GOAL, the first volume which is my take on this wonderful genre, is set in the fantasy world of Terrath. Populated by the aforementioned Fellow Races, including Gnomes and Trolls, the uneasy truce that has reigned for thousands of years is foretold by prophecy to fracture. Garrich, a Goblin orphan raised in the east and supposedly destined to restore peace to the broken lands, becomes the pawn of contesting wizards.
Needless to say, THE LORD OF THE RINGS (the books, not the awesome films from fellow New Zealnder Peter Jackson) was a firm favorite of mine growing up and later served as inspiration for my writing endeavors. Mention must also be made of Terry Brooks and his respected SHANNARA series, plus Raymond E. Feist's MAGICIAN, precursor of the expansive RIFTWAR SAGA.
Critics might argue that much of modern fantasy writing is deplorably derivative. My answer to them is, why mess with a proven formula? Take Elves, for example. Done to death, you might say? Not so. Every writer has a different interpretation on this common theme and I am no exception. My Wood Elves of Lothberen are typically pointy-eared and lithe-limbed, imbued with a sense of magical mystery. But they also are afflicted with the "human" foibles of greed and jealously, lusts for power and wealth, as well as suffering a racial division with their kinfolk, the Sea Elves. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait until you read about the Dwarfs!
