Marion Marchettoabout this book: Stairway To My Heart is the first book of a family saga - The Bridgewater Chronicles - that will ultimately be a series of four or five books. As a reader who enjoys books in a series, I thought it would be fun to create my own American Dynasty. Folks who liked North and South, or are fans of the PBS Series Downton Abbey are enjoying this book.
The idea for The Bridgewater Chronicles came to me in early 2010 - this first book took just about two years to complete. The title for this first book represents three things: a play that is performed within the story, a song from that play, and a stairway that links two lovers. I wanted a staircase on the cover because it would be an invitation of welcome as well as creating a timeless quality.
The most difficult thing about writing Stairway To My Heart was trying to write as quickly as my mind was racing. There were many scenes that were needed to give the characters their multi-layered complexities. Since I spent most of my life in the area where the fictitious Bridgewater is set, quite a bit of research needed to be done as this book is set in an era long before I was born. Most of it was done via internet search as well as phone calls to people I know back in Connecticut (the setting for Stairway To My Heart).
Beginning this new series has taught me to appreciate the era in which I grew up. While I thought, as a child, that things were sometimes tough I came away from writing this book realizing that the 1950s/60s was a perfect time to grow up. Women already had the right to vote and manage their own money while in the era of Stairway To My Heart women were an extension of their husband and very little more.
I hope that readers will enjoy my story and get to know the Newkirk family. Hopefully they will find one of the characters who will resonate for them and make them want to come back for the next installment.
