Hazel Hartabout this book: The idea for THE SURVIVLALIST'S DAUGHTER, my fourth novel, began in my childhood. When I was ten, I was snooping in my parents' room and came across a box with my birth certificate in it. Under father's name was a man I didn't know. Until that moment, I had believed the man married to my mother was my father. When I confronted my mother, her version was that my biological father was a no-good who didn't want me. She had married him on the rebound, found out the kind of man he was, and divorced him.
When I was thirty, I did meet my biological father, but we did not build a lasting relationship. However, stories about parents and children who have been separated and told lies about each other have been in my idea files from the beginning of my writing. I started a novel based on the idea years ago, but it wasn't I took the NaNoWriMo challenge that I completed a first draft of the manuscript.
The title of the novel has changed over the years. The first title was STEPCHILD, but I never got beyond the discovery of the lie in the story. The second title, the one used during my NaNoWriMo challenge was WHERE HOME IS. Finding a place that was truly home after learning her father had kidnapped her and everything she knew about her life was a lie became one of my main character's goals. The third and final title, THE SURVIVALIST'S DAUGHTER, brings together Kindra's background and beliefs and her spirit; she is a survivor.
