Nelson R. Elliottabout this book: A fairy tale with heart and grit. A young cook must work hard and get help from his friends to achieve his dreams. Along the way, he must adjust to a strange new land and free himself from the clutches of a hostile dragon.
I wrote this story when my wife was pregnant with our first daughter. I read to her in the womb every night, but I was a bit dismayed to see how watered down and candy-coated most modern children's books are. I set out to give my kids something more substantial to read. I settled on the fairy tale format because fairy tales were some of my favorite things to read when I was a child.
The world I tried to evoke was one of imagination and beauty, but also one of consequence - where values like responsibility, hard work, and taking care of friends and family have a real impact.
I wrote quite a few stories. After good reviews from family and friends, I decided to publish the favorites. I teamed up with a talented artist named Sam McKinnon, who did some beautiful digital paintings to illustrate the story!
