Susan J Kroupaabout this book: Best-selling author Virginia Smith calls Bed-Bugged, a "first-rate" mystery and "a triumphant beginning to a series that I hope will have many, many stories to come."
But, wait a sec. A mystery series featuring a bed-bug dog? After puckering their faces and saying, "Euww, bed bugs," people usually ask what led me to write about that icky subject.
The inspiration came from two things: my son's misfortune of discovering bed bugs in his apartment, and our adoption of a maniacally energetic, frustratingly independent labradoodle puppy.
I had already been thinking about writing a mystery from a dog's perspective, and the misadventures of our own dog gave me plenty of material. I decided to make it about a dog who flunks out of service-dog training because he has a bad attitude. A "career-change" dog. But what career? The answer came from my son's detailed description of how his exterminator arrived at the door with a sniffer dog trained to search for the little blood-sucking critters. A bed bug dog, I thought. And Doodle, the sarcastic, obedience-impaired labradoodle was born.
When Doodle undergoes his career change, he gets adopted by "the boss," Josh Hunter of Hunter Bed Bug Detection. Doodle sniffs out the bugs and likes the job well enough, especially when Molly, the boss's spunky ten-year-old daughter slips him extra treats. But Doodle's nose uncovers more than bed bugs—he makes a discovery that will change Molly's life forever, and he and Molly uncover secrets that makes them the target of dangerous men.
An engaging story told from a dog's point of view, Bed-Bugged is aimed at dog lovers of all ages, as well as fans of cozy mysteries. "Don't miss the opportunity to spend some time with this astute and sometimes cheeky canine," writes reviewer AuntB on Amazon. "Doodle delivers."
