Martin Daley

Author Martin Daleyabout this book: Welcome to the cosy yet criminal world of Detective Inspector Cornelius Armstrong, a policeman in Edwardian Carlisle (a historic city in the north of England). Inspired originally by the Sherlock Holmes stories of Arthur Conan Doyle, readers of Holmes may spot the odd homage to the Great Consulting Detective.

The other great inspiration behind the Armstrong stories is my home city itself, which – given that Armstrong doesn't have the archetypal Watson / Hastings assistant – takes on the role of the main secondary character. In fact it could be viewed that chapters of the area's two-thousand year history are being told through Armstrong's adventures. In this, the first Volume of Inspector Armstrong's Casebook, our hero comes into contact with The Young American and The Devil's Porridge (each volume contains two short novels).

An unknown American tourist, who will one day achieve greatness, visits Carlisle to research his family history. His arrival coincides with Inspector Armstrong's investigating of a macabre series of grave-robbing incidents in the city. The detective's enquiries inadvertently lead him into investigating a case that had lain dormant for over seventy years.

The second case is set against the backdrop of the Great War. With the building of the enormous munitions factory at Gretna, Cornelius is faced with the impossible task of controlling thousands of navvies who built and work at the factory, intent on coming into Carlisle on a nightly basis to drink away their disposable income. Labour unrest, Irish sectarianism, women's suffrage, and the Government's State Management Scheme are all issues, that when combined, prove every bit as explosive as The Devil's Porridge.

If you like escaping the hubbub of 21st century life to immerse yourself in late Victorian / Edwardian adventures, I hope you enjoy this journey back in time to meet a character and a setting you may hitherto be unfamiliar with.

Best wishes
Martin
