Elizabeth Baileyabout this book: I have a bit of a thing about amnesia stories. I find it fascinating how a person can simply lose every memory they have. The discoveries about themselves as they regain, little by little, some of their past, are not always happy. Was this the kind of person I really was? It's almost like getting a second chance, like refreshing the page and starting over.
With this story, the core difficulty likes not in the forgetting, but in the remembering. Lance recalls only the tragic loss of his first love, but in his confusion he thinks his rescuer is Clarissa. She has the same blonde hair and similar beauty, though she is older. If Chloe, who has taken Lance in after the accident, had not found herself drawn to him, all might have been well.
Lance thinks he loves her, but does he? Or does he still hanker for Clarissa? Chloe is a widow and independent. To give it all up without knowing she is loved for herself alone is impossible. Yet Lance has grown to depend upon her in the terrible nightmare of his condition.
This is a darker story than usual, an emotional drama exploring a deep and difficult psychological condition.
