Claudia Silvaabout this book: Like my other short stories, this story is a representation of what it feels like to grow up and belong.
In "Vocation" is similar to "Why Can't I Be Here?" because it explores why someone who wants to fit in and wants to live a certain way is denied that by something that is out of their control. I think with Vocation I used my love for the supernatural to talk about these issues. The main character knows what he wants to do with his life, he has found his purpose, and yet he is denied this by a power greater than he.
I grew up Catholic and I use my experiences to write this story, which makes it a little more personal to me.
I had a hard time coming up with the cover. At first I pictured the image of a priest, but when I talked to my cover artist about it, she suggested a crucifix instead. The black background gives the cover a sense of the forbidden and I like that.
Like the rest of my short stories, this one has an unexpected ending, although... given the circumstances, what other ended could it be?
what to read next: if you read and liked this book...
