Wayne Gerard Trotmanabout this book: The República de Cuba is a country of the West Indies, claimed for Spain in 1942 by the explorer Christopher Columbus. It comprises Cuba – the largest island in the Caribbean, the Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos.
Cuba is many things. It is the largest, most populated island in the Caribbean, a producer of fine rum and some of the world's finest cigars, a Marxist–Leninist single-party state, Americana time capsule and one of the most photogenic countries in the world. Sixty thousand classic cars, many of which were hybrids handed down from grandfather to father to son, adorn Cuban streets, lined with crumbling, centuries-old buildings.
A multi-ethnic country with over 11 million inhabitants, Cuba's people, customs and culture, derive from diverse origins. These include aboriginal peoples, centuries of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of slaves from Africa, American dominance and a close relationship with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
The classic 1950s and 1960s cars reminded me of my happy childhood in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. I grew up listening to Cuban music and it was a joy to stroll the streets of cities such as Havana and Trinidad where jazz and salsa constantly overflowed from bars, restaurants and open spaces. The polite greeting of a friendly stranger and the promise of spontaneous dancing was always just around each corner.
A tropical paradise of unrivalled beauty, Cuba has no poisonous plants or animals. Cubans love children and there is practically no crime in the country, making it an ideal family destination and one of the safest nations to visit in the world.
