Lance Morcanabout this book: Although inspired by true crimes in America, Silent Fear could have been set just about anywhere in the civilized world. Rightly or wrongly, we chose to set it in London – in a university for the deaf in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to be exact – because we believe the thriller genre suits London and this story has a very British feel to it.
Silent Fear is a multi-genre novel that spans the thriller, horror, mystery, sci-fi, crime and romance genres. It's an epic read, but has little downtime; there's drama on every page and action in every chapter.
There are two major sub-plots: a serial killer and a killer virus are both going about their deadly work inside a university whose occupants – both deaf and those of normal hearing – are confined within a building that has been quarantined from the outside world.
Spearheading the murder investigation is our kick-ass heroine, Detective Valerie Crowther, of New Scotland Yard. A Coda, or child of a deaf adult, she's well qualified to deal with the university's deaf students. As the murderer strikes again and again, and the virus claims more and more lives, Valerie has to use all her resources, and all her luck, to survive.
In researching this novel our eyes were opened to the everyday challenges facing deaf and hard of hearing members of the community. They encounter a unique set of challenges that those of us who are normal-hearing people can only imagine. To portray the deaf community accurately, we relied heavily on the assistance of members of that community. Hopefully, this story does justice to them.
