David Sayreabout this book: At some point, late in the process of writing my first novel, SOME ARE SHADOWS, I really began to think about how much the city of Miami has changed over the years. And I thought it would be interesting to explore that, not only in a broad sense, but also on a personal level. I felt it would be interesting to write several generational stories about the same family in the same city. That's what led me to write DIRTY SIDE OF THE STORM.
In a story that occurs forty years after the events of my first book, Delmon Sheen has become a private investigator, as his father Ben was. Setting the story in 1992 provided some tremendous opportunities to set the drama against the backdrop of devastation brought on by Hurricane Andrew.
Detective Delmon Sheen is searching for a missing nineteen year old named Eladio Calderon and one fundamental question is at the heart of this case: Is this young man missing because of an incident that occurred during the storm, or was there another danger afoot?
I enjoyed writing this book, careful to include little details that pertain to the first novel, while allowing this book to stand alone for new readers that didn't read SOME ARE SHADOWS. Mostly I enjoyed exploring a different era of Miami again. This is very much the town I grew up in and it was interesting to travel back there.
Ultimately, as always, I just wanted to tell a good, entertaining story. I feel like I accomplished that and I hope readers will feel the same.
