G G Collinsabout this book: "Dead Editor File" is the first in the new Taylor Browning Cozy Mystery Series. The title is a play on the phrase "dead letter file." I worked for a book publisher and experienced the myriad of requirements necessary to bring a book from contract to pub date. It's not always pretty. Usually, it doesn't result in bodies. Usually.
Taylor Browning is new to the book publishing scene. Mystery editor seemed like a safe occupation until the publisher, Preston Endicott, Jr., is found dead in his locked office in the executive suite. There are plenty of people who would be relieved to know Endicott is no longer a player, but did any of them kill him?
Endicott is a tyrannical boss. Disgruntled employees at Endicott Publishing land on the suspect list. Jim, the production manager, recently had a strident argument with Endicott. Alise, his new assistant threatened to leave after Endicott insulted her the afternoon before he died. Donald, the accountant, is antisocial, but that hardly makes him a killer. What about senior editor Virginia? Taylor wonders what is between her and Endicott. And then, there's his ex-wife Jessica. She has plenty of reasons to hate him.
Their bestselling author Dominique Boucher has just submitted her new manuscript and, gasp, it's a locked-room mystery called Alone to Die. It contains similar events to Endicott's demise. Does she know too much to be innocent? What about all the authors that have received rejections from Endicott Publishing? Did one go on a bender or get quietly even?
About the only non-suspect is Taylor's Abyssinian cat, Oscar, and he's in enough trouble at home.
Taylor makes the decision to do a little sleuthing herself. Too late, she discovers she is in danger and can't edit her way out of this one!
