Book: The First Born Sons by Raymond Boyd Dunncategories: Book, Australiana, Historical, Cloudland, Korean War, Tragedy, Country Life
Raymond Boyd Dunnabout this book: This short story of 20,000 words includes the six generations of the Rickards family, beginning with the first Billy Rickards up to his name-sake, the present day Billy Rickards. As the title implies, it covers the salient points of each of the first born sons of the family. It is my attempt to connect the final novel of the Pearson/Rickards trilogy to the modern day Billy Rickards , and his rail journey on The Ghan.(Once upon a Time on the Ghan). I suppose it could be classed as a genealogical story outlining each son's triumphs and misfortunes, reaching from the countryside of the Darling Downs in Queensland to war-torn Korea of the early 1950s. One thing I learned from publishing this book was that a writer should never edit his own work. After it was published I found one glaring error which had escaped my careful scrutiny. I won't tell you what, but I'll give you a clue - Chapter 4.
