Robert Mitchellabout this book: This is the first book that I have written in the third person. The other twelve were all written in the first person, because in that way I could let myself become part of the story, the alter-ego of the main character, and be able to run and leap through the adventure. But this book was to be different. This book was not to be about me, although there is probably a part of me in there somewhere. There are parts of people I have known during my lifetime, and others whom I have met only in passing. This time I had to stand apart, and it was difficult. At times it was even voyeuristic, embarrassing, but it had to be done. I wanted to tell the story, from start to maybe finish, the story of one man's interest in the opposite sex, of his heart-fluttering passion as he falls in love for the first time as a young boy, even though he doesn't then know what love is, nor sex for that matter either. And then, as he progresses to teenager, then to the importance of a young man, and finally to having a wife, and lastly to middle-age and divorce. The passion changes, the depth of feeling removes itself from sexuality. What were once conjoined parts of the whole have become separate. Each part now has a different meaning, a different sensation. This was a story which was twenty-one years in the making. For twenty of those years it was no more than two chapters, and then I put my head down and wrote, and wrote, and wrote.
