Kate Zarrelliabout this book: In this erotically-charged love story, a young English teacher working in Venice helps an Italian academic curate an edition of the memoirs of the great lover, diplomat, poet, and lastly librarian, Giacomo Casanova, and in time they begin to act out his adventures along the canals and in the ancient palazzi of his native city. I was inspired to write this story by two things: a love of Venice, and reading Casanova's autobiography. He died alone in a foreign country, largely forgotten, yet he'd known the greatest men and women of his age. Why such a lonely end? It's quite clear that though he was very successful in the chase, he was hopeless at relationships. He just wasn't there for the long-term, ever. My theme for the book then was to explore how my couple might be true to each other, yet somehow keep the excitement of seduction alive. Could they manage it, through role-playing the adventures of the long-dead Casanova, still so vividly alive on the page?
The hardest part of writing this book was the revision, which I did right the way through Covid lockdown. I'd made my last visit to Venice the month before, but in those dark weeks watched that beloved, deserted city via webcam; St Mark's Square empty but for the occasional pigeon nearly broke my heart.
I hope readers will enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. A word of warning though: in homage to the man who inspired it, it's frankly erotic, and includes scenes of mild consensual bondage and voyeurism. Not for pearl-clutchers!
