Tricia McGillabout this book: Tricia McGill's contemporary romances are all set in Australia, and Amethyst is no exception. Born in England, she has made her home in this vast, beautiful and captivating country for many years, and never tires of the various idiosyncrasies that make it unique. Football (footy) is one of these, and this story, although fundamentally a romance, has the game as its backdrop. Brought up almost within shouting distance of a football (soccer) ground, Arsenal, in north London, the game did not hold her interest, but with five older brothers, numerous uncles and then a husband who loved the game was it any wonder that the ups and downs of the team became a part of all their lives.
After moving to Australia her husband remained faithful to his old soccer team, but reverted to watching the Australian game. Aussie Rules football is unique. Most Australians are devoted to their favourite team and follow slavishly all through winter until the finals are held in September. One-eyed is the term used to describe them.
The idea for this story came from watching an amateur match years ago in a small country town. Every community rallies around the footy team, and in fact through drought and flood, forest fire, abundance and times of need the team holds most small country towns together.
