Sissy opens a coffee shop next door to David's new venture--a local newspapers. They forge a friendship when Sissy offers him free coffee in exchange for weekly advertisements. An attraction develops and the town cheers them toward something more permanent. But Sissy's mother, never a very loving parent, causes problems and tries to interfere in Sissy's life. David must face the lies his father told him about his mother, a Cherokee. When he finds out his mother did not die, but is alive and living close to Murphy, he attempts to make sense of his past and her own history.
Once they've dealt with their own pasts, David and Sissy must discover if either of them are capable of forging ahead in their relationship but a community tragedy threatens to pull them apart for good.
