Jennifer Irwinabout this book: A Dress the Color of the Sky is about a woman in rehab for sex addiction. The story goes back and forth in time giving the reader a chance to empathize with and care for the protagonist, Prudence Aldrich. Prudence attempts to lead a normal life as a wife, mother, and friend but the demons of her past are starting to break through and she is trapped in an unhappy marriage. Prudence fills the black hole inside of her with random sexual encounters.
Once the reader learns the painful details or Prudence's childhood the story takes a poignant turn and the reader begins to root for her. The cast of characters in rehab adds to the plot including a slip up in rehab with another addict. Prudence feels like an anomaly since she's the only patient with a blaring hot-pink sticker with the words, Females Only, emblazoned across the front...until Kim checks in. Everything comes to a head when Prue's estranged husband, Nick, her brother Henry, and best friend, Lily all show up to hash it out during Family Week.
This book will take the reader on a wild, emotional roller coaster ride. The story delves into how one's childhood can affect our self-esteem and addresses some tough social issues. Some may face their own past while reading A Dress the Color of the Sky and find peace with moving forward toward healing and self-love. I began writing this book to heal from a painful divorce and toxic marriage and as I continued to seek out reviews from friends, I received the encouragement I needed to continue to polish my manuscript and publish. While writing the book, I sold the film rights and the story is being made into a feature film. It took me five years to write the book as I am a single mother of three amazing sons who are very proud of their mom!
I did quite a bit of research to write this book as I wanted the story to reflect the reality of those in recovery. Some of my research included reading books about sex addiction, interviewing sex addicts, attending SAA meetings and workshops on healing from childhood trauma. It was easy for me to write about a painful marriage and difficult childhood as I knew about these things first hand. My late father was a drug addict and mentally ill so I had a grasp on how his addiction affected me and my childhood.
This book is contemporary fiction and the perfect book club read. I included book club discussion points in the back of the novel as well. Thank you for reading, A Dress the Color of the Sky and please feel free to let me know what you think! I'm open and available. And of course, post a review!
