Maggie Plummerabout this book: In Book 2 of her semi-autobiographical Jessie Morgan Series, author Maggie Plummer sweeps the reader into 1970s San Francisco, an international mecca for hippies and dissenters. Jessie, now 21, embraces the city's Bohemian energy and vibrant street life. Gay rights protests are on just about every corner; Women's Liberation is the order of the day.
WEBS IN THE MIST is about growing into adulthood during the '70s. It's about the webs we weave - sometimes innocently, sometimes not so innocently - in the confusing mists and fogs of life. It's about bouncing back in the face of adversity.
This novel offers readers an authentic slice of San Francisco life in the early 1970s, from a writer who was there. Young readers have a chance to experience the era's intense counterculture; older readers get to revisit their own hippie years. "That was a unique time in San Francisco," the author says. "It was a golden age, although we didn't know it at the time. I'm so glad I was there then! Writing this novel is my way of honoring that time in that place. I also wanted to get my own stories written, in fiction form."
Compared to Book 1 in the series (BELL-BOTTOM GYPSY), this novel has a tight plot and a clear conflict. The fiction takes over and the tension runs high. As young Jess explores colorful, ethnic San Francisco neighborhoods, she moves on from her troubled past.
Or does she?
WEBS IN THE MIST is recommended for mature readers due to 1970s-era sex, drugs, and profanity.
