Pippa Greathouseabout this book: By the time the Civil War began to draw to a close, Miriam Hanner Clarke had been a widow for four years. Strasburg, Virginia was battle-weary. Homes had been confiscated, with one exception; the estate of Pembroke, where she stayed. Miriam had thrown herself into nursing the wounded soldiers brought to the dormitory to keep her mind off her grief. She was quite skilled at nursing. And quite unprepared for the care of a new Union soldier who had come in one night with a chest wound, needing her close care.
He wasn't at all what she expected. She thought he would sleep. He didn't. She thought he would be appreciative of her care; he wasn't. Despite his demanding presence, she found him endearing, and she was surprised when she began to fall in love with him so quickly.
Captain Nate Alley had walled himself off from emotion. He'd lost parents, his sweetheart, everything he owned, when he found himself on a pallet on the floor of the hospital with a flaxen-haired, blue eyed young woman hovering over him giving him orders. How she had managed to weave her way into his heart was beyond him. But she had.
When he was given a medical discharge against his will, he agreed to go to Pembroke to try to protect it, and all the ladies there who had no protection. But his determination to do things his way was at odds with what Miriam wanted him to do. He was accustomed to being in charge, and he would be damned if he was going to let this little slip of a girl tell him what to do.
Publisher's Note: A sweet love story, filled with stern discipline, humor and romance. If this is not to your liking, please do not purchase the book.
This was the last of "The Strasburg Chronicles series" And I had great fun writing it! The Civil War has always been one of my favorite times in history. And this is one of my favorite areas to write about. Winchester, located right above Strasburg, changed hands between Union and Confederate armies over seventy times during the war. The whole area was shell-shocked by the spring of 1865.
Too, there were readers who begged me to let Miriam have her own story. I'm so glad I did! It took around six months to write because there was so much research and I was determined to make all the information in it correct. I love historical fiction!
