Roger E. Brunerabout this book: Ten or eleven years ago I wrote and self-published my first novel. I thought being an honors English college grad qualified me to write a terrific book. I was wrong, as I discovered when I started reading writing books and attending writers conferences. I was actually so embarrassed about my first attempt that I removed it from circulation and have never counted it as one of my books.
But doggone it! I loved the story and the characters, and once I had a better grasp of writing what other people would want to read it, I decided to write it again. Almost totally from scratch--title, character names, plot elements and sequences. And this book is it.
An author should love his own books, but it's impossible for all of them to be his or her favorite. Nonetheless, this one ranks right up there among the ones I love most, and I hope you'll feel the same way when you read it.
One thing I left out of the new publication is an article about the story's autobiographical elements. Readers don't want to buy a book to learn that, so I'll let you guess which of the characters', uh, characteristics and back story are fictitious and which were inspired by, but not necessarily exactly the same as, real life.
Impractically Yours is a Christian novel. Not overly preachy. Very clean. But also funny and very moving.
It's not a genre romance. Yet it comes close. It's definitely romantic.
If you like books with a significant take-away, this one will leave you thinking more about the importance of trust and truth in relationships. Especially romantic relationships.
Even after reading Impractically Yours more times than I can count, I still laugh at the funny parts and cry at the moving parts. I hope you will, too.
P.S. This new edition of Impractically Yours originally ended with a different epilogue, one that's filled with puns and silliness. My publisher agreed to release it as a separate publication. Look for it as "Impractically Yours: The Lost Chapter."
