C. D. Verhoffabout this book: READERS' FAVORITE review, 5-Stars:
Thirteen-year-old Glory Alley feels the weight of the world on her shoulders – and that's before she discovers a new universe open to her through the magic of the Elboni Stone! In The Wish Thief by C.D. Verhoff, Glory is the object of jokes and the pity of the kids on the bus because she lives with her drunken father, ailing grandparents, and five siblings in a run-down house outside of town. Glory's passion is exploring the caves near her house in Queen's Mesa with her best friend Clash. After finding a beautiful, perfectly round stone guarded by a strange creature, Glory becomes the focus of the Star Riders who have been sent by the Lady GOST, Guardian of Sacred Things, to recover the stone and bring the universe back into balance. Along the way, Glory comes face to face with some hard truths, but never loses sight of her deepest wish – keeping her family together in spite of all the negative treatment she has received. The Star Riders, who see her only as a thief, put Glory through some very difficult tests with some surprising results. Is Glory really a bad person or have they misunderstood her?
Adventure, emotion, love, hate and more are all part of this excellently written book. The Wish Thief is a voyage of discovery for not only the main character, Glory, but the other beings as well. C.D. Verhoff has brilliantly blended the Christian message of salvation into an exciting adventure tale that shows the value of determination and hard work, especially toward an unselfish goal. There is a wonderful message here for anyone looking for more than just another story but the story itself is excellent, even without considering the underlying symbolism. All I can say WOW! I especially like the bonus material and explanations of the symbolism and religious connections for those who may want to explore that avenue. This is truly a book for readers of all ages; it grips you from page one and stays with you long after the last words."
