Betty Mermelsteinabout this book: Desert Sensations is a beautifully illustrated children's book about a little boy who explores his surrounding desert home and all of its sensations it has to offer. He experiences a dust storm, a sunset, canyon walls, lightning, giant pitted rocks, and many animals that wander near him. The paintings are done in Encaustic, where the waxy layers of paint are fused to a board with a heat gun, giving wonderful texture and color. My illustrator, Andrea Dickkut, lives in the Sonoran Desert.
I also live in the Sonoran Desert and have appreciated its beauty for many years. I wanted children living here and outside of the desert to experience what I have through a little boy's eyes. Many of its plants and weather phenomena are unique to the area. I taught elementary students about the desert, and we even painted sunsets, as the boy in the book tries to do. It's a curriculum that the children loved, and I am happy to share part of it through my book.
