This is a math story about the spoon superheroes who help people measure ingredients for things like chocolate cakes. When their town is hit by a tornado, they help dispense the exact amount of medicines needed.
Students who help parents at home with baking and cooking will be familiar with measuring spoons and it may be pointed out that they are marked with fractions. Looking at a 1/4th teaspoon, a child may think it should be larger than the 1/8th teaspoon. Eight is larger than four, after all. As a first grade teacher, that was one concept we had to work on during the fractions unit. Children with math experiences in real life such as measuring spoons, measuring cups, rulers, yardsticks, and money will do better in math class than those who do not have such experiences.
