Lorraine Allmanabout this book: Enterprising Child helps parents and educators understand what it means to be 'entrepreneurial' and discover fun, inspirational ways in which these characteristics can be developed in children between the ages of 4 and 14.
I was inspired to write the book because I knew that there are many parents doing great things with their kids, but still more who wanted to support and prepare their children for their future but not sure how. Parents have such a crucial role in helping our children become entrepreneurial in whatever way that happens - as an employee, a business owner, or a volunteer, and Enterprising Child will support them with this.
I chose the title Enterprising Child because I wanted the message to be clear that this isn't just another 'teach your child business skills book' it's about learning the broader entrepreneurial life skills and attitudes to help our children become the best they can.
As part of writing the book I was honoured to be able to interview some of Britain's top entrepreneurs, asking them about their childhoods and how their own parents influenced decisions they went on to make about education, business and work. I also interviewed young entrepreneurs who shared their stories about how they came to start a business so young, and of course spoke with lots of parents about what activities they are doing with their children to support their entrepreneurial learning adventure.
I have been so fortunate to receive support from Apprentice winner and founder of Bright Ideas Trust Tim Campbell MBE who not only agreed to be interviewed, but also wrote the Foreword for the book. Also Sue Atkins, ITV Parenting expert and parenting coach endorses the book by saying... "We live in turbulent times of change and financial upheaval. Adults rarely nowadays have just one occupation, job or single career. Enterprising Child is a fascinating and practical book which will support and empower you as a parent to understand the mindset and attitude necessary to teach your children the all-important skills for life, in the world of work. With over a hundred structured ideas according to your child's age, and plenty of inspiration along the way to help, you will have a roadmap for successfully encouraging, nurturing and understanding your child's entrepreneurial characteristics so you can feel relaxed, positive and confident in your adventure to unlock your child's true potential."
