Shelley J. Reevesabout this book: The Birds is a compilation of short stories about the lives of six different birds and what their experiences may teach us about life. The stories were written with middle-grade readers in mind, but my hope is that adults will appreciate them, too.
I decided to title it, "The Birds" as a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, especially since one of the stories is about a crow. In his film of the same name, some crows attack children on a playground, resulting in several injuries. Perhaps this movie is one of the reasons that crows get a bad reputation, but the crow character in my story displays true-to-life behavior and wouldn't dare hurt a soul unless provoked.
Crows are among my favorite birds, and I hope that the story of Corbie inspires readers to learn more about corvids and their abilities. Having said that, "Corbie" is only my second favorite of the six bird stories. The theme of "The Vagabond" is one that's near and dear to my heart, and it's what keeps me going in spite of the obstacles that stand between me and my dreams.
