Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: Max's Royal Adventure, the 6th solo adventure for Max the talking Tonkinese cat, is the 16th book in the Shadows from the Past time-travel series for Middle Grade readers.
Five years have gone by in history since my trio of children and Max travelled back in time to 17th century Essex to face the dreaded Matthew Hopkins, otherwise known as the Witchfinder General. It is now 1651, and England has lost its king. The country is being ruled by his executioners – the Parliamentarians – under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell.
The Guardians of Time now send their newly recruited Special Agent, my feline hero Max, on an important mission. As civil war divides England, a young man is on the run and, with a king's ransom offered for his capture, he cannot escape his pursuers without help.
The inspiration for this novella seemed to come out of nowhere, taking me completely by surprise, and I found that once I'd started I just couldn't stop, writing feverishly until I'd finished it. This is a famous episode in English history and I made sure that the historical details in my version of events are as accurate as possible but, as usual, there is a huge fictional element. Max, of course, is crucial to the success of the operation and, yet again, his endearing qualities shine through. With each passing story, the character of the bumbling cat is building. To misquote Shakespeare, "Some cats are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." – I wonder which one best describes Max!
"Wendy Leighton-Porter loves history and she loves to share her passion for the past with young readers… Young readers are being introduced to history through the eyes of a very adventurous, time-traveling cat. I loved this story from start to finish: education and adventure go hand in hand with these books." – READERS' FAVORITE BOOK REVIEWS
"I truly disliked history when I was back in school so didn't learn a lot. HOWEVER that has changed and now with kids at home that I am teaching I am learning as much history as them, if not more!" – L. POMEROY, parent, USA
"The Max books are, I believe, quite unique in being both enjoyable and educational where history is concerned." – OLIVER EADE, author
