Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: The fifth adventure in the Shadows from the Past time-travel series for Middle Grade readers, this book is set in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii where the inhabitants are blissfully unaware of the threat of the volcano that is about to destroy their town, bringing death to all those who do not heed the warnings. Can four visitors from the future – 3 children and a talking cat – convince them of their imminent fate?
As a former Latin and Classical Studies teacher, I spent many years teaching my students about life in Pompeii, even taking them on visits to see the ruins for themselves. I have always felt a strong connection to the town, a true time capsule, and feel I know it almost well enough to find my way around blind-folded. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, we can only imagine the horror of the Pompeians as their town was destroyed around them and so many lost their lives in a truly terrifying manner. Indeed, we cannot fail to be humbled and saddened by the tragic remains of the people, lying frozen in time, who didn't manage to escape the disaster.
My intrepid foursome arrive in the town only days before the fateful eruption, knowing that time is of the essence if they are to persuade the locals to leave and if they are also going to be able to get out safely. There is one slight hitch: They have the misfortune to arrive in the middle of a slave auction and find themselves being sold. They are now trapped. What will happen?
Amidst all the tension, the underlying theme of the twins' quest to find their missing parents who are lost in the past continues and there are tantalising clues that they may be on the right track. Adding a little light relief, the character of Max the Tonkinese cat begins to move to the forefront of the stories and he has an important role to play. The larger-than-life feline also brings an element of gentle humour to the action.
A true combination of history and fiction, based on a subject that I'm passionate about, I admit that I really enjoyed writing this book and it remains one of my favourites in the series to date.
