Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: Book number 6 in the Shadows from the Past adventure series for Middle Grade readers transports my young time-travellers to the mythical court of Camelot. But was it only mythical? Their task is to prove that Camelot did exist and that King Arthur was no legendary figure but a real historical person.
For all lovers of Arthurian folklore, this is a fantasy escape into that world, exploring the theory that Arthur was a flesh and blood Romano-British warlord who battled against Saxon invaders. As well as looking at the historical aspect of the legend, the story also includes many of the traditional fictional characters from the tales of King Arthur. Be prepared to meet, amongst others, Merlin, Guinevere, Morgana and Lancelot. For comedy's sake, the latter has a ridiculous French accent and is convinced the twins must be long-lost relatives – their surname is Lancelot! I hope my young readers will be amused to "find out" where Arthur's famous sword, Excalibur, came from and also how it acquired its name. Of course, this is pure invention on my part.
This book marks something of a turning point for Max the talking Tonkinese cat. We're starting to discover that he is rapidly becoming the central character in the stories. The reluctant feline hero is horrified to learn that he features in ancient prophecies and that great things are expected of him. He just wants to go home and be an ordinary cat again. However, his problems are only just beginning and we'll find out more, as the series progresses.
