Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: The time has come for Max the talking Tonkinese cat to branch out on his own. This novella is a brief interlude that gives us time to draw breath and recover from the tension of the action in the preceding Shadows from the Past stories. Max's Arabian Adventure, the 8th book in the series, is a shorter story which sends Max on a journey all alone. His destination? The Rub' Al Khali, or Empty Quarter, the largest uninterrupted sand desert in the world – not a pleasant experience for my feline hero.
Having relocated to the United Arab Emirates because of my husband's job, I wanted to set the scene in the landscape of the Arabian desert, decorating it with a few flourishes of local colour. With a hint of the magical Tales of the 1,001 Arabian Nights, I'm sure you'll spot more than a passing nod to the story of Aladdin in Max's first solo adventure.
Snatched from his home, Max is dragged inside the pages of the Shadows from the Past book that has been left lying open on the floor. Taken against his will, he is at the mercy of a wicked magician who abandons him in the desert. The poor cat despairs of ever finding his way home again until he encounters a friendly falcon, a camel and even a genie. And all of this was because of a magic lamp!
I saw this story as a test of Max's ability to perform on his own, out of his comfort zone and without the support of his three human time-travelling companions. Needless, to say, he more than lived up to my expectations and fully justified the hero status that he is rapidly acquiring as the series progresses. He's now ready to take on more responsibility…
