Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: Max's Midnight Adventure is the 11th book in the Shadows from the Past series for Middle Grade readers. After the dark events of the previous story, The Shadow of the Two Princes, I felt my young readers needed a mini-break from the fear and the tension, and who better to lighten the atmosphere than good old Max, my talking Tonkinese cat? This novella is a brief, comic interlude in the series and, although it doesn't further the plot in any way, I hope the story will raise a few smiles and make people love Max even more.
When he ends up trapped in the attic one night, poor Max is in for a bewildering experience which has hysterical consequences. Falling asleep in a box of Christmas decorations, the cat has a real shock when he awakes. The feisty Christmas tree fairy is furious with him for snapping her wand with his considerable bulk, and that's only the start of his problems… Things go from bad to worse when he encounters Colonel Nutcracker, not to mention a trio of French hens. Desperate to escape from the attic, where all the decorations and children's toys have now come to life, this has become a true nightmare for the panic-stricken feline.
There is actually a lesson to be learned from this frivolous and funny tale. We can all achieve our goals through team work and co-operation, not forgetting a certain amount of tolerance and respect. But one thing's for sure, you might never view the Twelve Days of Christmas in quite the same light again!
"This is a wonderful peep into Max's life that affords lots of laughs, largely due to the inventiveness of the author, the hilarious interactions between the various characters, and the ultimate charm of Max, the big-hearted (albeit slightly cowardly) hero of the series." FIONA INGRAM, author
"This was a hoot and a half. Toy Story meets the Nutcracker in this gem of a mini tale… kids will absolutely fall over laughing. As always Wendy Leighton-Porter weaves her magic in the atmosphere and storytelling." K. C. FINN, YA author
