Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: Max's Undercover Adventure is the 12th book in the Shadows from the Past time-travel series for Middle Grade readers. Max the talking Tonkinese cat has his fourth solo adventure in this novella, which is a side story to the main series. It may, at first, appear that this story is something of a detour from the main action, but all is not as it seems.
Snatched from his home once again, the large Tonkinese cat is in for a bumpy ride when he's taken to a secret establishment where he must undergo special training, alongside a cast of other animals that he's never met before. The shadowy group, known as the Guardians of Time, who run the camp, have been mentioned before in a couple of previous books but they now put in an appearance, and it appears that Max has been selected to become one of their agents, codename 009 Lives.
Although it might be viewed as nothing more than an amusing interlude, this book is a kind of halfway point in the series – there will eventually be 25 titles in total – and it begins to explain more of the over-arching plot. The Guardians of Time are directing my time-travellers' journey through history from behind the scenes, and we now start to understand that Max is central to the success of the children's expeditions into the past. What's happened in the series up until this point has been far from random but is, in fact, all part of a grand master plan, and Max was destined from birth to fulfil a special role in that plan.
I had a lot of fun writing this and included many humorous scenes featuring my favourite feline character. Max is not the bravest or the most energetic of cats and doesn't cope well without his home comforts. However, when the going gets tough he usually rises to the occasion, even if it is sometimes by accident rather than by design. Our hero-in-the-making graduates from the course with flying colours and the Guardians send him home, confident that he is prepared for the dangerous missions that lie ahead. We can now expect great things of Max in the stories that are to come.
"If I look at the series as a whole so far, the doom and gloom factor is going up (as well it should be when things get more dangerous), so the Max stories have appeared at just the right moment to provide light between the shadows." - K. C. FINN, YA author
"The author presents readers and listeners with exciting and innovative examples of how different personalities and creatures can work together for a common cause. Not a bad thing to learn at an early age. Highly recommended!" – CHERYL CARPINELLO, author
"Another terrific tale from the pen of Wendy Leighton-Porter. As ever, the author delivers a rattlingly good pace and draws the reader along through rib-tickling plot-lines." – JOHN CLEWARTH, author
