Wendy Leighton-Porterabout this book: The 15th book in the Shadows from the Past time-travel adventure series, The Shadow of the Witchfinder, picks up the story where the previous book, Max's Hallowe'en Adventure, ended.
Max the talking Tonkinese cat has just returned to the present from the year 1646, and my young time-travellers must now accompany him back to the village of Mistley Thorn in Essex, where an old lady by the name of Goody Clowes desperately needs their help to defeat Matthew Hopkins, otherwise known as the Witchfinder General. The foursome's mission is to save Goody Clowes' sister and friends, accused of witchcraft by Hopkins, and bring an end to the Witchfinder's campaign of terror.
While dealing with the unpalatable topic of what happened to a large number of innocent women in those unenlightened times, I was aware of the need to weave the real history into a tale of fantasy. The "Is she, isn't she?" question of whether Goody Clowes is actually a witch keeps the children guessing throughout, but the old woman's kindness is in direct contrast to the wicked cruelty of the Witchfinder and I hope this will encourage my young readers to ponder on the nature of good versus evil.
The time-travelling youngsters will need every ounce of resourcefulness they possess if they are to succeed in their mission, and my feline hero, Max, is called upon once again to show courage in the face of adversity. Success comes as a result of teamwork, friendship and loyalty and my characters learn useful life-lessons along the way.
At this stage in the series, I decided that the time had finally come to explain just why the character of Max is so important. This story reveals hitherto unknown details about his unique heritage and the reason why he cannot escape his destiny. I hope that the truth about this very special cat will both surprise and delight the reader!
"I have to admit I love a good time-traveling mystery and Wendy Leighton-Porter's Middle-Grade fantasy novel, The Shadow of the Witchfinder, is certainly a good page-turning, action-filled adventure in time travel. Add a little magic and witchcraft and a bit of history to the mix and this story is well worth the read for people of all ages." – READERS' FAVORITE BOOK REVIEWS
"Excellent story set in the period of the English Civil War. I am impressed by how much historical fact Wendy manages to impart in each of her stories without making it obvious that she is "teaching" her young readers." – L. J. HALL, USA
