Alan James Garnerabout this book: This book, aimed at younger readers, is a fanciful imagining of my own cherished boyhood. Based loosely on my experiences growing up several decades ago in Hastings, New Zealand, when the world seemed a simpler place, facts are interspersed with fantasy in a breathless romp which propels the reader to a bygone era, when books were printed on paper, cordless phones were science fiction and cars were manual drives, not automatics.
A collection of linked tales rather than a traditonal single story, it follows the growing pains of Eamon Birdsley, a chubby lad with a stammer, as he deals with bullying, the ups and downs of friendship and the perpetual mystery that is girls. Blessed with a vivid imagination he indulges in the flights of fancy that provide escapism for kids everywhere. Dreams of transforming into a superhero, time travel back to prehistory, rocketing to the stars and confronting humungous alien robots making planetfall of Earth hurtle Eamon Birdsley and the reader through various realms, only to bump back to reality at the close of each escapade. Did these wild adventures really happen or were they just the product over a boy's overactive mind? I'll leave that for you, the reader, to decide.
Just remember, adults seek to recapture that same escapism by reading books...for are we not simply grown up kids?
