Mark C. Collinsabout this book: "Meet The Bugs!" is a poem picture book highlighting 18 common bug species. It is intended as an introduction of these common bugs to children aged 3-8. Each bug is represented in a cute "bug-eyed" cartoon style, and a corresponding short poem highlighting a simple fact about the bug.
I had originally drawn 8 of these bugs two years ago to be sold as art prints in my Etsy shop. Sales were very modest.
A year later, I was connected with Annette R. Burrell, a children's book author who had written a 5-book series which featured an all-bug cast of characters. She needed an illustrator who could demonstrate a talent for creating cute bug characters for this series intended for young readers. My bug prints were the perfect example of what she was seeking, though I created an entirely original set of bug characters for her. I completed the illustrations for the five books, and "The Adventures of Danny Cricket" went on sale on Amazon.
Late in 2013 and earlier this year I published two books I had written and illustrated ("GRANDMA STINKS!" and "Ben's Day") to favorable critique. Not long after, some of my young fans had inquired when my next book was coming out. I was in the beginning stages of illustrating a new book I had written when I realized it would be a quite a while until completion. I wanted to get something out there for the fans in the interim, so I looked around at what I might have as far as pictures go. My little original bug prints would be perfect if I added a few more, and put a small book together with some rhyming text, I could complete an ebook rather quickly and offer it for free for the young fans. Then one mother informed me that she, along with many other mothers preferred actual books over electronic media! So I went back and put print AND ebook formats together simultaneously.
"Meet The Bugs!" was a title inspired by the Beatles first album, "Meet The Beatles!" The poems are short and playful while educating young readers on a simple fact about each bug. Much of my own knowledge of these bugs (and others) came from my experiences as a child, constantly outside digging, seeking, observing, and playing with the local creepy-crawlies of our backyard and other locales in southeastern Pennsylvania.
