Kathleen J. Shieldsabout this book: In this story of the continuing Hamilton Troll Adventures, Hamilton Troll meets a bumble bee named Barney. Barney is a little rounder than most other bumble bees and he seems to spend his entire day going from flower to flower eating pollen (which is a bees version of candy). While Hamilton follows Barney talking with him and asking questions he discovers bees are colorblind, they can't see the color red and male drone bees don't sting. Yet it is when Barney flies off towards another flower and falls right out of the sky that Hamilton realizes Barney needs to change. "His wings couldn't hold him, he dropped!" Hamilton suggested Barney eat less pollen and play and exercise more which with a little work, gets Barney flying again.
In this book there are two pages dedicated to the Texas wildflowers Barney visited in the story so children can learn their names. There are also vocabulary words and definitions like nectar and pollination.
This series is great for beginners, makes excellent bedtime stories and is educational enough for 1st and 2nd graders. The website has games, teacher curriculum, videos, printable coloring pages and activities, Did You Know facts about the animals and characters of the stories and so much more. Also, Pink Light Sprite is hidden in one of the pages of each of the books which intrigues children to keep looking, even though the illustrations are vibrant enough to enthrall readers young and old.
