Kathleen J. Shieldsabout this book: In this story Elwood Woodpecker discovers petrified wood the hard way! Woodpeckers drill holes into wood to find bugs for food but Elwood met his match with this wood, it is harder than stone! Hamilton Troll comes along Elwood sitting there holding his head with a headache and realizes there is something very different about this wood so he and Elwood take a trip to the beaver brothers to learn more.
There, they meet Baxter and Boswell Beaver who teach them about petrified wood and how their grandpappy discovered it. Beavers build dams out of wood in rivers and while their teeth constantly grow back, they learned about petrified wood a long time ago. This story even has a 2-page diagram of how petrified wood is created, there is also a description of sedimentary layers.
This story is packed full of education and fun. With vocabulary words and definitions and the introduction of three new characters, this book is one of our favorites.
