Sandra Kay Griffieabout this book: I wrote How Elmer Lost His Hop because being bullied is something I experienced as a child. Some people can overcome the effects of bullying, but for others, like me the effects can last a lifetime. I place myself as my character and use how I felt when this happened to me. For the ending I wrote how I would have liked for the teacher to have handled the situation instead of ignoring it. I used bunnies as characters so it would appeal to very young preschoolers.
I wanted my story to show that it is much more fun to help someone than to hurt their feelings. I also wanted to show what can happen when a teacher is aware of what is happening to a student that is being bullied- how they can fix the problem at the very start like Teacher Bunny does. Happy endings don't always only happen in stories- they can happen in real life when the right person or in this case the right Teacher Bunny gets involved.
