Aviva Gittle

Author Aviva Gittleabout this book: "Kitten & Snake" is the fourth book in the "Kitten and Friends" series. I wrote the first story, "Kitten & Butterfly" back in 2013. In the first three books, Kitten finds a way to play with a butterfly, a koi, and a squirrel.

In a series meant to show children that it's possible to be friends with those who live and look differently from them, I decided to push it to the edge. Kitten would meet a snake. Not any snake -- a rattlesnake. Keep in mind that each creature is meant to represent a human group. That's why the creatures don't have specific names. Unfortunately, most children grow up hearing adults talk about whole groups of people. They hear all kinds of things applied to the group — that may or may not be true of the individuals who make up that group.

Snake is the most resistant to Kitten's charms. But, Kitten is unfazed. It never occurs to him that he and Snake can't find some way to have fun together. Slowly, Snake warms up to the idea of playing a game with Kitten. As in all the "Kitten and Friends" books, Kitten and Snake learn about each other's ways, likes, and dislikes.

"Kitten & Snake" is my favorite of the seven Kitten stories. I narrated the book on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/aviva-gittle/kitten-and-snake. It's interesting that some adults won't give the story a chance because they are afraid of snakes. Which is exactly why they should read it to their child.

"Kitten & Snake" presently has a 5-star rating on Amazon. One reviewer said it best, "The story about how unusual friendships can work is such a great lesson and can lead to some wonderful discussions with your child."
