Book: Billy Helps Max - Stealing (Billy Growing Up, Volume 5) by James Mintercategories: Book, Stealing, Theft, Dishonest, Shoplifting, Robbing, Values, Children's Book
James Minterabout this book: Stealing is taking something without permission or payment. Children may steal for a dare, or because they have no money, or as a way of getting attention.
In this story Max starts by painting her pink girlie bike green, but she sees some go-faster stripes and believes she has to have them. However, she has no money, and her birthday is ages away. She eventually gives in to temptation and steals them from a local shop. Billy Field finds out and sets out to help Max undo her misdeeds by making her aware that she has is to return the stickers. She feels guilty and nervous when she realises she has to apologise also. This is often the best way to deal with such a situation.
Parents can teach their children that stealing is wrong by insisting they return whatever item they've taken and apologise to the owner. This makes a child understand that if they take something that doesn't belong to them it impacts the other person and it's wrong.
