David D. D'Aguannoabout this book: This particular novel is unique, I feel, in the sense that there are a couple of passages which provide some insight into the reason why Brett is such an unscrupulous bastard. One of these moments occurs when Brett is about to commit an act that is particularly heinous (even by his standards), and he resolves to do it when memories of a terribly painful childhood episode rise up within his consciousness.
Another example occurs in the chapter entitled "Brett Takes a Beating" wherein he doesn't take a beating in the physical sense, but his emotions (such as they are) are under attack, primarily due to the fact that the assailant happens to be probably the only person he's ever had tender feelings for in his entire life.
On the other hand, I believe that these relatively dramatic moments are counterbalanced by the usual plentiful examples of outrageous and comic moments, with Brett behaving in typical unscrupulous-bastard mode in the way he treats both the men and the women in this novel. Plus, his cockiness is even intensified (if such a thing were at all possible) when he succeeds in settling a score with a man from his past who at times has made life quite unbearable for our poor unscrupulous bastard.
I should also point out that any outlandish remarks and/or opinions that Brett may happen to make regarding delicate subject matters (abortion and homosexuality, to name just two)are his and his alone, and in the context in which they appear, are meant to reflect more on Brett's narrow-mindedness than on any serious discussion of such issues.
The bottom line, of course, is that this novel should entertain the reader, just so long as Brett's frequent over-the-top actions and attitudes are not taken too seriously.
