Florence Osmundabout this book: My goal with this book, "How to Write, Publish, and Promote a Novel," is to share what I've learned during the past ten years writing novels so others can avoid making the same mistakes I did, as the opportunities for making mistakes were (and remain) numerous. There are still times I refer back to pages in this book and others to remind myself of things I need to do to improve my writing to make it more credible, engaging, and marketable.
My wanting to share what I know about the business started with a website. When that became too large and cumbersome to manage, I revamped it into this how-to book. Then I turned my website into an interactive blog www.florenceosmund.com where I post excerpts from the book and related articles about the more dynamic side of the writing business—current events, industry changes, recent laws, and new marketing and promotion strategies.
Whether you plan to self-publish or go the traditional route, by reading this book, you will learn how to structure a story; develop memorable characters; write in active versus passive voice; "show, don't tell;" create drama, tension, conflict, and crises; keep the story moving forward; and set the tone, mood, and atmosphere. In addition, you will learn to budget your expenses; find and work with an editor; understand the publishing industry; and market and promote your book.
There is no guaranty that by reading this book and following the advice I offer that you will become a successful, award-winning author. But by reading it and applying what you've learned, you will have a much better chance at it.
