Elerie Crawleyabout this book: In "Sensually Gone!", Alles Vorloren lightly fictionalizes her bipolar disorder diagnosis as a novel where a doctor and patient converse, tracing the roots of various mental illnesses.
Alles Vorloren has created an unusual hybrid of a novel and self-help guide for those suffering from bipolar disorder or struggling with a borderline personality. The book is structured as a conversation between a doctor and patient as they journey together to understand the real nature of various mental illnesses. Through the back and forth of the physician and patient, readers can begin to see how personality traits, brain chemistry, therapy and life experiences converge to structure the brain and its functioning.
"Sensually Gone! " is based on Vorloren's personal experience as someone diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorders later in life. She illustrates her frustrations and coming-to-terms with the diagnosis through a book built around an intense and convincing physician-patient relationship between Dr. Joseph Lawrence and his mental health patient, Loren.
The doctor notes how Loren's deteriorating mental state may have been brought on by a chemical imbalance as well as years of a demanding social role in which her sacrifices went unacknowledged and her desires for recognition went unrequited. As the doctor puts it, Loren exists in a world made up of givers and takers. "So many givers live this life scratching at each day to find one moment of pleasure they can claim their own along their journey to help others in need," writes Vorloren. "While many of the takers glean at the end of the day and gain nothing more than their mere reflection in the mirror."
Loren is a giver whose unceasing decades of giving have driven her to the point of mental anguish. She turns to the doctor in hopes of finding a cure. At the very least, she seeks a therapeutic strategy to make sense of her life before she loses her mind entirely and can no longer function normally in society.
Both analytic and compassionate, "Sensually Gone!" will appeal to anyone who has suffered through mental illness or cares for someone going through similar circumstances.
